Consultation Fees & Rebates

What does it cost?

After the Medicare clinical psychology rebate of $124.50 is applied, the gap payment or out-of pocket expense for a 50 minute sesson is $55.50.

For a 30 minute consultation, after the clinical psychology rebate of $84.80 is deducted the gap payment is $15.20. These gap payments count towards your Medicare safety net

Bulk billing is also available under certain conditions. If you are bulk billed there is no charge to you. If you feel that you are eligible for bulk billing, please mention this when you are making an appointment.

How to pay for consultations and how to get rebates

Payment is due at the time of your session. The easiest way to pay is with EFTPOS using a credit or debit card. You may also pay by cash, cheques are not accepted.

  • Medicare - With our facilities we make it easy for you! If you pay by EFTPOS or cash, the Medicare rebate can be deposited directly into your bank account on the spot. You need to have registered your bank account details with Medicare, and to have a debit card for this service (although you can pay with a credit card). Alternatively we can provide you with a receipt which you can either take to a Medicare office, or claim by post or online. If you are being bulk-billed there is no paperwork for you, but you will need to bring your Medicare card.
  • Private health insurance - If you are claiming from your private health insurance fund we will give you a receipt and you can claim the rebate directly from the fund. We do not have HICAPS.
  • Third party payment - In circumstances where payment is being made by a third party, for example, an employer, WorkSafe, TAC, or ATAPS, an invoice will be sent to that organisation for payment.
  • Private payment - If you intend to pay for sessions yourself and you do not intend to claim a Medicare rebate, you do not need a doctor’s referral and there are no restrictions on the number or length of time of sessions. You may self-refer for this option, just call or e-mail for an appointment.

How much are the rebates?

There are two main types of rebates available for psychologists - Medicare and Private Health Insurance.

  • Medicare A Medicare rebate of up to 75% is available with a current referral from a GP or psychiatrist. The rebate for clinical psychologists is $124.50. This is the rebate you receive for our services. This is higher than the rebate for generalist psychologists which is $84.80. In both cases the referral process is the same.            Why clinical psychology?
  • Private Health Insurance Rebates for clinical psychology are available from most health funds under their Extras policies. We suggest that you check with your health fund regarding their eligibility requirements before making an appointment as this rebate amount varies according to your fund and your level of cover. You are able to access your allowable Medicare rebated sessions and then access further sessions using your private health insurance. However you are not permitted to use your private health insurance to cover any gap payments.
  • Your GP may also sometimes be able to refer you under other schemes (with various conditions). It is best to discuss the most appropriate type of referral for you with your GP or psychiatrist.
