A recent survey (September 2012) has reported that Australians who sleep well are generally happier.

The Australian Unity Well-Being Index surveyed 2000 Australians and indicates that the two thirds of people who get 7 to 9 hours sleep per night do better than those who only get six hours. About 30% of the individuals surveyed slept for less than seven hours a night. Those who slept more than 10 hours tended to lack purpose in their lives.

Neuroplasticity refers to the ability of the brain to form new neural pathways and connections across the lifespan. In response to new situations and disease and injury, the nerve cells in the brain can make adjustments in order to compensate.

There is some evidence that certain foods can affect our mood in a positive way. How do foods affect us? Because foods contain chemical compounds they can have an effect on our brain chemicals. Components of certain foods have been found to have an effect on our neurotransmitter levels. In depression for example, the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine are deficient in terms of quantity or uptake.
