What does it cost?

How to pay for consultations and how to get rebates

Payment is due at the time of your session. The easiest way to pay is with a credit or debit card.

  • Medicare - After paying for your session with your credit card or debit card you will be issued with a receipt by text or email which you can use to claim your rebate from Medicare. This can be done via a phone app called Medicare Express, on the Medicare website or by post.
  • Private health insurance - If you are claiming from your private health insurance fund we will give you a receipt and you can claim the rebate directly from the fund. We do not have HICAPS.
  • Third party payment - In circumstances where payment is being made by a third party, for example, an employer, WorkSafe, TAC, or ATAPS, an invoice will be sent to that organisation for payment.
  • Private payment - If you intend to pay for sessions yourself and you do not intend to claim a Medicare rebate, you do not need a doctor’s referral and there are no restrictions on the number or length of time of sessions. You may self-refer for this option, just call or e-mail for an appointment.

How much are the rebates?

There are two main types of rebates available for psychologists - Medicare and Private Health Insurance.

  • Medicare A Medicare rebate of up to 75% is available with a current referral from a GP or psychiatrist. The rebate for clinical psychologists is $126.50. This is the rebate you receive for our services. This is higher than the rebate for generalist psychologists which is $84.80. In both cases the referral process is the same. Why clinical psychology?
  • Private Health Insurance Rebates for clinical psychology are available from most health funds under their Extras policies. We suggest that you check with your health fund regarding their eligibility requirements before making an appointment as this rebate amount varies according to your fund and your level of cover. You are able to access your allowable Medicare rebated sessions and then access further sessions using your private health insurance. However you are not permitted to use your private health insurance to cover any gap payments.
  • Your GP may also sometimes be able to refer you under other schemes (with various conditions). It is best to discuss the most appropriate type of referral for you with your GP or psychiatrist.
